NCM collaborates with KNCO
Collaboration comes in many forms. For the past several years NCM has been building up a news and information program called Nevada County Now. This has been a grass roots effort and has taken much longer than anticipated….but does’t everything that is really worth it. This program is built by average people in the community that come together with one common goal. To share factual news and information BUT to make it fun and engaging….and to feel like what we are doing is relevant.
Yes, Nevada County Now includes news that comes to us in the form of press releases but we also get out there and find the stuff that isn’t well known or all over social media. We find the stories that are interesting, the people who make our community awesome, and we are on the streets talking to folks. We are going for that local paper feel that we all miss. That feeling you got when you opened it up and read something cool about someone you know, or you learned something you didn’t know before, or that you simply trusted the information. Except now we get to deliver this feeling so you can watch it, hear it, or read it. It is a massive community project that has many moving parts. The same content is put out in a variety of different formats because not everything can be put into a single small box and let’s be honest….we all consume differently now…..yet we miss that local paper feel.
Part of the model was always to offer the ability to share local news accross a variety of platforms, all at once and in a way people wanted it. That’s a big order. But here is the thing. Community projects have the ability to bring different minds together to solve problems. In reality, we are just solving a problem and creating a solution so that it is sustainable, even though people in the circle come and go.
Nevada County Media is a unique media organization because we are not only distributors and creators. We are also a teaching organization and a community hub. Taking all of the assets that we bring to the community and focusing them into an idea is how Nevada County Now was birthed. It’s not the only project we do but it is certainly the largest. The cool part……it’s all organic. People change, stories change, formats can even change. It grows and shrinks and even explodes with too much activity at times. The constant is that people want to be a part of something positive and important. Nevada County Now is that positive and important. Because it is all about community and it isn’t just the bad news. It’s a melting pot of stuff all blended together so it works. Community media is so needed today and we created a program that delivers it. Hummm imagine that (insert a huge smile here) and you can be a part of it.
We are happy to say that the audio and radio portion has just been added. Our collaboration with KNCO and hopefully others is a great step to helping educate and inform our community, and show them that yes, we can all coexist in this beautiful community.
The team at KNCO helps co-host the weekly news show. Paul Haas is the main co-host but many others can also fill in. The weekly program will have a regular air time on the KNCO Newstalk 830 station, the program already airs on Comcast ch 11, and it is published to the Nevada County Media YouTube channel and website. We are also working with Truckee to bring our sister station more into the mix and for them to push it out in their network. In the works is a dedicated website, which will be a one stop shop for news and information, where the user can choose to read, watch, or listen. We are talking to a variety of collaborators and individuals on this portion and hope to launch this in the coming months. Baby steps when funding is an issue.
This program allows a ton of information to be presented in a variety of ways. It is made available to the community for free. Any individual or organization can reshare any item within it. It is packed with people you know and trust. It allows fellow nonprofits and the amazing work they do to be highlighted. It helps the community learn about new businesses and it allows our community to get factual information. But best of all…..it allows the user to choose which topics they want to dive deeper into.
It’s news without the bias and information that is easily consumable. It’s 100% community driven. It’s fun, informative, and is packed with so much. We look forward to continuing to grow this program and keeping it true to its roots. We are excited about the future collaborations that will continue to make this something that the community can be proud to be a part of.
Press Release:
Nevada County Media and KNCO Announce Collaboration to Expand Local News Access
Nevada County Media (NCM) is excited to share big news about its local news program, Nevada County Now. Through a new collaboration with KNCO Radio, local news and information will now reach the community in more ways than ever before.
Nevada County Now is NCM’s local video news and information program designed to keep residents informed, connected, and engaged. The program features a combination of a traditional news show with items that make us an amazing community to live in. It includes:
Studio-based news and information updates
Field stories from around the county
In-depth interviews
Special segments and local features
Highlights of local businesses and organizations
“This community news and information program has been a labor of love for 5+ years,” comments Ramona Howard, Nevada County Media Board Chair. “News doesn’t have to be only fires and snow storms, although those things are important. Our goal was to create a program that also focused on what makes our community an amazing place.”
Broadcaster Paul Haas joins the weekly program, as do other members of the KNCO team. This new partnership brings together trusted community voices to deliver a variety of news and information in all forms — all at once.
Watch it.Hear it.Read it.
Whether audiences prefer video, radio, or digital platforms, Nevada County Now is designed to meet people where they are.
“Local news is the backbone of a strong community,” said General Manager Mary Anne Davis. “Partnering with Nevada County Media allows us to broaden the scope of stories we can share while maintaining the trusted local presence our listeners have relied on for decades. We are excited for this collaboration.”
Currently, Nevada County Now can be found on:
The Nevada County Media website
