We the People - Film & Discussion Series

We the People - Film & Discussion Series

This seven-part series was designed to be a thought provoking discussion, which is exactly what we will be doing. The goal of this series is to inspire people to become informed and politically involved in decision making that effects our communities and our country. The series offers an opportunity for discussion between Americans with differing views.

Join local award winning filmmaker Catherine Busch with this important discussion series. It runs May 1st through June 12th 11:30-1:00. This will be free to attend. Bring your lunch, meet others and let's talk. Doors open at 11:30, program starts promptly at Noon. Nevada County Media - 355 Crown Point Circle (behind Analog Devices)

—————-

May 1st “Uprooted” - This first film of the series focuses on the immigration of Japanese people to the United States and why they came. How they integrated into American society and what was the cause that escalated prejudice against them? How did they work to be an asset to the United States? What was it like being a Japanese American and what personal consequences did they experience after the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941?

May 8th “The Incarceration of Japanese Americans” - Japanese American families living on the west coast of the U.S. were systematically rounded up and incarcerated in make shift camps throughout 7 states. Most lived their lives out of fear for their children’s safety and did whatever was necessary to maintain their families well being. Some did not.

May 15 “Go For Broke” - Many struggled with the decision to enlist, or not to enlist in military service while their families were being held prisoners. The war was escalating and decisions had to be made. Unquestionable loyalty to the U.S. was demonstrated by the Japanese in Hawaii, the 100th Battalion, which led the way to the beginning of the 442nd Regimental Combat team!

May 22 “The Return Home” - When the camps closed, the bittersweet return of Japanese American families was full of fear and anxiety. Wanting to return home but fearful of the malicious hate they knew they would face… would they be able to find work,… would they be able to trust that the police and firemen would help if they were in need?

May 29th “People Who Helped” - Who were the ones that stood up for Japanese American families while the majority of others tried to undermine their dignity? Where did these humanitarians come from? Organizations? Teachers? Neighbors? Friends?

June 5th “Racism and Redress” - The Civil Rights movement in the 1960’s provided the impetus for Japanese Americans seeking redress, and an apology for the incarceration.

The work that guided the Civil Liberties Act into becoming law was initiated by the Japanese Americans Citizens League at their convention in 1978. Oddly enough, the JACL was first organized in 1929 by a group of young Japanese Americans for the purpose of protecting Civil Rights. At that time in 1929, the JACL members were fearful of what was going to happen to them, because the country was enduring the Wall Street Crash, the Great Depression and was headed for the environmental and economic impact of the Dust Bowl…the seeming collapse of society!

In 1988, when the Civil Liberties Act was signed by President Regan, the President lamented to the audience, ‘the Japanese American Incarceration was a mistake!’ The 10 years of work it took to bring the Civil Liberties Act to the fore, restoring a sense of justice, honor and dignity to our country, was done by ordinary men and women, the backbone of our country!

June 12 “Could This Happen Again?” - When our country’s Constitution was created, the framers challenge was for the citizens to continue the work of the Constitution by moving it toward a more just and perfect union. Based on the their ideals, the final program in the series focuses on three main areas. #1. The cause of the Incarceration of Japanese Americans, named by a federal commission, was racism, war hysteria, known today as the politics of fear, and the failure of political leadership. #2 Addresses how the public was immersed in prejudice through movies, books, schools, universities, national organizations, family bias and fear. #3 Calls us back to the Constitution’s challenge by looking at how each of us might be failing the promise of the Constitution for ourselves and others. Our first president, George Washington, urged the citizens of our fledgling democracy to grow in awareness, social consciousness, civic responsibility, and personal involvement! Our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln warned us of the consequences of misusing power in government!

We the People - Film & Discussion Series

Join us for the sixth part of this thought provoking discussion series.

—————-

Barely Informed Recording

Are you ready to get involved with a comedy project that highlights your wit?

The stage is a small greenscreen studio with a desk. The show is all about you and the performance you deliver. Barely Informed is a comedy project that takes the viewers on a rollercoaster of stories, that you write. It is a program with a variety of news people, who probably should have gone into a different profession. It's a not a real news show, but it is delivered as one.

How it works

You sign up to appear on an episode. You write 3-5 short news stories that are completely not true, well maybe mostly not true. You can deliver them alone or with a co-host or guest that you bring with you. You take the episode in whatever direction you wish.

You will be be working closely with the NCM team to create this live-edited program….hopefully in one take. Don’t worry, we will help you through that part.

There is a small fee to participate in this program. You can sign up for one or as many episodes as you like. Think of this as building your highlight reel in real-time. The more you do, the better you will get. Cost is $25 per episode.

Don’t miss out getting on our schedule. Send us a request (below) and we will reach out.

*Volunteer with NCM and don’t pay a dime. Check out our Swap Hours program.

Nevada County Now Volunteer Event

If you are looking to get involved with your community…..then this may just the thing you are looking for. Nevada County Now is our flagship project that not only delivers news to the community, but helps people learn all of the aspects of live television, and all that goes into producing it. NCM is looking for folks who are wishing to volunteer in front and behind the camera. It is the ultimate volunteer project that benefits all of the community. Simply show up and audition or chat with us about how to get involved.

Below are the positions we are seeking:

  • Nightly News Hosts - The “news host” role for the nightly news is the person that is delivering the information, as well as introducing and chatting with guests. We have both regular and guest host positions.

  • Segment Host - The “segment host” covers art, music, stage, events, sports, history, and more. Host roles include delivering information about that topic, as well as lining up guests to speak with in their particular segment.

  • Interview Host - This is for individuals who like doing a bit of research about people and then chatting with them about a variety of topics. These are much longer interviews than those scheduled for the nightly news and usually touch on the tougher topics.

  • Small Town Stories Storyteller - This is for individuals who like telling a story about a person or topic. They are the person behind story. This role helps write the copy for the stories, as well as works with the field crew to capture the story, and the editor to help record the voice-over to bring it together.

  • Graphics Guru - This position is for those who like creating the look of a project. The needs are fairly simple and usually require a fast turn around.

  • Episode Producer Trainee - If you are someone who would like to learn what it takes to put together a “live recorded” news show, well look no further. This is both rewarding and a pretty easy process.

  • Field Crew - If you are someone who wants to help gather b-roll or shoot field interviews, this is a fun project to volunteer your time on.

  • Studio Crew - If you would like to volunteer but have no clue what your doing, no worries…….NCN is a program that unites people of all skill sets. The program always needs researchers, writers, greeters, and runners.

  • Promotional - If you are someone who likes spreading the word, then this is a perfect project for you. It includes everything from writing promo scripts, to passing out “how to watch” cards at events.

Please do not wear green if you are coming for an on-camera screening.

Volunteers receive a free membership and hours are eligible for our volunteer swap program.

IF YOU HAVE A DESIRE TO GET INVOLVED BUT DON’T KNOW HOW YOU FIR IN, SHOW UP TO THIS CASTING CALL.

Actors Workshop & Meetup

Grab a friend and join us at this super fun workshop. It is on the 1st Monday each month @ 4:30-6:30.

It is a bit different than our one hour, very small acting workshop, where we do some one-on-one coaching. This workshop accomidates a larger group and participants interact with with each other (rather than being individually coached like in our smaller workshops, although yes, there is some coaching involved in this one). We also will sometimes have speakers for part of these. They are a great way to learn, while also connecting with others. This is a hands-on workshop that covers voice and on-camera acting.

These have a small fee and are open to everyone in the community. This one you can just drop-in, no registration required. Members are $15, and non-members are $25. Payment will be collected upon arrival.

Please note that entry will not be permitted after 15 minutes of the workshop start time.

SMPTE - Best Practices for Live Stream Distribution

SMPTE - Best Practices for Live Stream Distribution

Does it seem like new streaming services are popping up almost daily? Well, you’re right; they are. And each with its own unique requirements for live streams they want to receive. All of these live stream destinations, each with its own set of variables, make it virtually impossible to automate the management of these streams.

Fortunately, a group within SMPTE has been working on an effort to try to fix this. We believe it is possible to rationalize and simplify these variables with a set of best practices. We also believe it’s possible to close some of the security holes that exist in today’s world of live stream distribution.

This SMPTE group will establish a set of Best Practices for Live Stream Distribution to simplify the process of standing up, securing, and maintaining live streams sent from content providers to streaming services. In this presentation, we’ll talk about what’s being done, who’s involved, and how to get involved.

About the speaker:

Chris Lennon serves in Ross Video’s Office of the CTO as Director, Standards Strategy. He is responsible for Ross’ activities in standards and trade organizations, as well as its global thought leadership program. Chris also serves as Executive Director of the Open Services Alliance (OSA), a global industry organization focused on interoperability among microservice oriented media systems, now a part of SMPTE’s Rapid Industry Solutions. The OSA produced the media industry’s first microservices standards and continues to lead the way in this rapidly evolving area.

Chris has held a variety of leadership positions in the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), including Standards Director, Western US Governor, Local Section Chair, and Chair of multiple Technology Committees. He is a SMPTE Fellow and recipient of SMPTE’s prestigious 2008 Citation. He currently is a manager of the SMPTE Rocky Mountain Section and serves on the IABM Board.

I Have A Dream Speech Challenge

Get your pens, laptops, and notebooks ready—this is your chance to inspire Nevada County and beyond! Nevada County Media is thrilled to announce its inaugural community-wide challenge: “I Have A Dream” Speech Challenge.

This unique challenge invites individuals to craft a speech designed to uplift and motivate the community. Participants can write about any topic close to their hearts—whether it’s unity, resilience, environmental action, or personal growth. The only rule is that speeches must not mention political figures.

“We want to encourage our community to channel their voices into messages of hope and inspiration. This is a chance for individuals to share their vision and connect with others through the power of words.”

The challenge is open to residents of all ages. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or a retiree, this is your opportunity to shine and make your voice heard.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Deadline: Submissions received now through March 31, 2025

  • Word Limit: 400 words or less

  • Submission Email: Send your speech to news@nevadacountytv.org

  • Participants will receive confirmation of their submission and details on how their speech will be shared with the community.

Selected speeches will be made available to the public through Nevada County Media’s platforms, allowing the entire community to celebrate the creativity, passion, and unique perspectives of our community.

Like Dr. King, who inspired millions and changed the course of history. Through this challenge, Nevada County Media hopes to spark the same spirit of change and connection, reminding everyone that their words can make a difference.
